A Letter from the President of the HCS

Aloha Friends,

Welcome to the 48th season of fine music presented by the Hawai’i Concert Society. Seven concerts are scheduled, all at the U.H. Hilo Performing Arts Center. As usual, our season features some of the world’s greatest classical musicians.
By ordering tickets now you can guarantee that you and yours will be in attendance at your choice of events, and at substantial savings.

The 2009-10 season begins in late September with a potpourri concert by Chamber Music Hawaii, our friends from the Honolulu Symphony orchestra, who will perform in several groupings. We then will hear the recent Naumburg Award–winning cellist, 23-year old David Requiro, in our first cello recital in decades. Those of us who attended the viola concert by David Aaron Carpenter last year or the piano recital by Joyce Yang the previous season, know how thrilling listening to these young virtuosi can be. The rest of the season features return performances by several artists and ensembles of world renown.

In January we will present guitarist William Kanengiser, who has been here before as part of the LA Guitar Quartet and is also a famed soloist. Trio con Brio Copenhagen, who gave a sparkling concert three seasons ago, is also performing that month. In February we will present the Tokyo String Quartet together with its priceless quartet of Stradivarius instruments.

The year 2010 marks the 200th birthdays of both Chopin and Schumann, so it is appropriate that some of our concerts include the music of these giants. In April we are delighted to present pianist and Van Cliburn Award-winner Jon Nakamatsu, whose family comes from our islands, in a recital featuring music by both composers. And in February we present a very special concert, “The Life and Love of Robert and Clara Schumann,” with baritone and soprano duo Robert and Kathleen Van De Graaff singing some of their greatest songs and duets and sharing the stories of their lives.

As an added feature this year (but not part of our “official” season), we offer the opportunity to attend the opening performance of Amadeus, directed by Jackie Pualani Johnson, together with the reception following the performance. Many of you may recall the Academy Award-winning movie based on this play about the rivalry between Mozart and Salieri. The reception includes dessert and a question-answer session with the actors and the director.

Season tickets are great bargains – a 20% discount off box office prices. If you do not wish to or cannot attend all of the concerts, you may custom-design a mini-series of at least four concerts, at a 10% saving. Extra tickets for a particular concert can be added applying the same savings. You also may order fewer than four tickets (at box office prices) at this time. You can easily add a ticket order for Amadeus. Our tickets make great birthday and anniversary presents, Christmas stocking stuffers, etc. Order now to ensure that you do not miss this exciting season.

Sincerely,
Tom Geballe
President
