Joyce Yang on a Brand New Steinway; Interpreti Veneziani on Very Old Strings (excerpt from article in ArtCentering.)
'The Hawaii Concert Society is presenting a classical double-header in January, first a performance by pianist Joyce Yang on Wednesday, January 16 and then a concert by the baroque string group Interpreti Veneziani two weeks later on the 30th. Both events will take place at the U.H.H. Performing Arts Center.
Joyce Yang is the silver medalist of the 2005 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The youngest entrant in the competition, at age 19, she not only captured second prize but also the hearts of the wildly cheering audience, and her professional career is off to a spectacular start. Ms. Yang¹s concert will include works by Scarlatti, Schumann, Brahms, and Australian composer Carl Vine. If you¹d like to be completely swept away by her playing before the concert, just visit www.hawaiiconcertsociety.com, and click on 'Listen' at the bottom of the page to get a taste of how she approaches Scarlatti.
Ms. Yang¹s Hilo concert has assumed special significance, because the University of Hawaii at Hilo has purchased and has now received a new Steinway Concert Grand Piano to replace the one acquired in 1963 jointly by Hilo College and the Hawai¹i Concert Society - 44 years ago! The January 16 recital will be the first time that the new piano is heard in a public performance. Needless to say we on the Board of the Concert Society, which acted as a catalyst in the chain of events leading to the purchase, are thrilled, and are highly grateful to the university for taking this bold and generous step, which will benefit our community for decades to come. I hope you will be in the audience that evening to experience Joyce Yang¹s artistry, as well as the debut of the new Steinway.
