We estimate that the educational activities arranged and sponsored by the Hawai'i Concert Society educational reached roughly 1,000 students in East Hawaii during the 2010-2011 season. We are constantly impressed by the dedication of the artists we present and the openness and responsiveness of the students and faculties at these programs. We are grateful to be able to provide opportunities for students to see, hear and learn about the music presented by HCS, especially when we consider the fact that our educational presentations and student discounts often provide the only such opportunities available to the youth in our community. We congratulate and thank our members, whose contributions made the following outreach activities possible.

Two of our artists, soprano Rachel Schutz, and pianist Joyce Yang, gave master classes this season. As can be seen in the photos, both of these personable young women interacted well with the voice and piano students who performed in the classes. Rachel's accompanists, a string quartet led by violinist Iggy Jang also gave a hands-on educational program at Kapiolani School attended by 150 highly attentive students.

Prior to its May concert Chamber Music Hawaii performed two educational programs at Kamehameha Schools and one at Connections in downtown Hilo. In addition to hearing music for traditional string quartet, students were able to hear music featuring the bassoon, an instrument with which very few students were acquainted. Bassoonist Marcia Schweitzer gave a detailed explanation of that largest of wind instruments.

We would have liked to have organized additional educational services, but unfortunately the busy schedules of our artists did not permit more than those described above. The board is already working to arrange educational activities with next season's artists.
